We’ve all had that typical conversation at coffee shops, dinner tables, and social gatherings. You know the one—it almost always starts out with a brief discussion about the weather and then inevitably takes a turn down career street.
It goes something like this:
|Person:||“So Mike, what do you do for a living?”|
|Me:||“I’m a project manager at Britten, and you?”|
|Person:||“I work at some boring 9 to 5.”|
|Me:||“How do you like it?”|
|Person:||“You know, it’s a living I guess”. How about you, Mike, how do|
|you like working at Britten?”|
|Me:||“I’m glad you asked”|
Can of worms opened…
You see, I can’t just give a canned answer to this question, because working at Britten isn’t just “some 9 to 5 job” for me – I actually truly and sincerely love my job.
So in that spirit, I’d like to share what I love most about working at Britten with anyone who’s considering a career here. And to make it snappy, I’ll do it in three reasons.
- Britten is a creative, highly collaborative, hardworking, and open environment where you get to work alongside a bunch of innovative and dedicated people. I never (and I mean never) get bored working at Britten. Every day is different: one day I’m working with a customer on an international marketing campaign, and the next I’m helping a professional football organization create signage for the big game (yeah, that big game).
- I also come to work every day knowing that the management team not only values me, but believes that every single employee is important. Britten has a solid history of promoting from within, in fact our founder and president encourages employees regardless of station to “think big” and approach him with ideas and innovation – and he rewards people that take initiative.
- The company is headquartered in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan. For those of you who have never been, Traverse City is an amazing town. It has almost all of the amenities of a big city, like a huge variety of top-notch restaurants, a whole bunch of great breweries and wineries, some of the BEST beaches in the world (if you don’t believe me, Google it, you’ll be surprised), and plenty of shopping options.
I know I sound like a cheerleader, and I guess I am sort of. You know the old adage, “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”, that’s pretty much how I feel about my job. Are there a few stressful days here and there? Sure. Can things get a little hectic from time-to-time? It happens. But that’s the fun, right? I’m never bored and I’ve got all my awesome co-workers to lean on.
So, potential applicant, what do you do for a living?
